Rich Mom on Vacation:

How to look elegant at the beach.

Every Summer, I eagerly begin the search for new beach attire. And every year, I find myself wildly disappointed. Somehow, at even my most trusted stores, “beachwear” is still stuck in trends from ten years ago. I find myself walking down aisles filled with tassels, neon, weird embroidery, and unflattering silhouettes. It always ends frustratingly, leaving me cobbling together a strange hodgepodge outfit every time I want to go to the beach.

If it were just an outfit to wear until I put my feet in the sand, I could see how this would sound like an annoying complaint. However, I live in Charleston, SC, and a day on the beach is never just a day on the beach

There’s the beach, and then there is almost always a subsequent trip to get tacos and margaritas or continuing the day with friends out somewhere where people have to look at me. I have dreams of being a rich mom on a Caribbean vacation one day, but until then, I’m trying my damnedest to look the part. Since this has been something on my mind for a few years, I have actively tried to find ways around the beach shopping frustration. I’ve found a few tips that may help you if you’re as serious about “faking it until you make it” as I am.

1. Find a Sandal You Actually Want to Wear↓

Most beachgoers choose whatever flip-flops they can find without regard to how they look or how they will hold up. I won’t shame you for choosing flip flops, they just aren’t for me. I typically choose a slip-on sandal for my beach look, but I’ve found that they need to be able to withstand the elements so I don’t end up with a ratty pair of shoes by the end of the summer. Something like these slides are cute and practical.

2. Don’t Shop the Beachwear Section↓

Instead of looking for coverups, I’ve started buying two piece linen sets or breathable dresses that won’t hold water all day. Places like Zara have great tunics that double as a cute summer outfit.

2. Get Creative↓

One of my go-to beach looks is tying an oversized scarf as a sarong paired with a tank or t-shirt. Getting out of the mindset that we can only buy coverups is key for creating cute looks!

2. Chic Beach Accessories↓

Coolers and umbrellas no longer have to look like they came straight from a tailgate. Companies like Business & Pleasure Co. and Corkcicle are making really stylish accessories that will complete your beach setup. Carrying accessories you actually like will elevate your look.
