Unpacking Fall Sweaters is a Love Language

Move over physical touch, gifts, quality time, and all the other passe love languages; there’s a new lingo in town - unpacking fall sweaters.

It’s that time of year when we finally get to reach into the back of our wardrobes and unpack those snuggly piles of comfort ready for cooler weather.

And we’re calling it; this is the love language we’ve all been waiting for.

4 Reasons Unpacking Fall Sweaters is a Love Language

I’m pretty confident there aren’t many who’ll need convincing on this one, but just in case, here’s a quick run-through of why exactly unpacking fall sweaters is such a swoon-worthy event:

1. Cozy Comfort Vibes

Summer is all about ‘how little can I wear and still stay cool?!’ which is fine, but there’s nothing I love more than the opportunity to get cozy.

Whether digging out those light knits or the chunky, thicker woolen wares, unpacking sweaters is a mood all in itself. It warms me to no end just thinking about the coming days of toastiness.

2. Layering Opportunities

I love nothing more than a good layered look, and unpacking my sweaters is a fab reminder of all the opportunities to come!

From a knitted vest over some of my lighter linen shirts or a cable knit over those summer dresses, I still want to get a bit more life out of this year - there’s a wealth of layered love to explore.

3. Instant Wardrobe Refresh

If you’re like me, summer often means reaching for the same handful of pieces you know you feel cool and comfortable in. I’m not going to lie - by the end of it, I’m pretty bored of wearing the same pieces over and over and definitely hungry to mix things up.

Sweater weather is the harbinger of a new fresh way to think about my wardrobe and an instant revival of my creativity when putting outfits together. I’m very much here for it.

4. It’s ‘New’ But Not - Ya Know?

Although I deeply try to resist buying new and be conscious about the trends I partake in, I cannot deny the wonderful feeling of purchasing a nice new piece of clothing (it’s a whole other love language, let's face it!)

One of the real reasons I love unpacking my sweaters is it gives me that dopamine hit of feeling like I’m getting something new to jazz up my looks without it actually being new - which means no guilt in the days after a big splurge!

When unpacking, I often find a piece of two that I’ve packed away the season before and forgotten about, and I love the feeling of ‘ooh, I know just how to style this!’ with these new/old pieces.

3 Easy Sweater Refresh Tips

Unpacking your sweaters is a whole regime in itself, and if yours look like they need a little TLC - you’re not alone.

Thankfully freshening them up doesn’t take too much work. Here are three easy steps to get them ready for those chilly days:

1. Gentle Wash

Pop your sweaters in the washer on a delicate, cool wash to help freshen them up. Remember to always check care labels; if something is wool or cashmere, you might want to consider getting them professionally dry cleaned (just to be safe!).

2. Air Dry

Never tumble dry your knits if you can avoid it. Instead, allow them to air dry. I like to hang mine on sturdy wooden hangers and give them a good shake-out and a gentle stretch to ensure they keep their shape as they dry. A sunny spot inside or outside can help your cozy sweaters get a good dose of bacteria-killing sunshine but don’t leave them out too long as bright sunlight can fade colors.

3. Give them a Groom

Materials like wool and cashmere are prone to bobbling with wear, but it doesn’t mean you have to consign them back to the wardrobe. There are lots of great little devices on the market that can help remove light pulls and bobbling, giving your sweaters a brand new lease of life. Darker colors will likely need a good run-over with a lint brush, too, and - voila! - your sweaters are fresher than ever and ready to be worn all season long.

It’s Love

Fall brings lots to look forward to, and while cooler weather might not be everyone’s favorite, I know the opportunity to re-explore our wardrobes and take on a little bit of a creative fashion challenge as we transition into a new season is undeniably exciting.
